After Your Print Arrives

Caring for Your Print

Our prints are made with archival materials rated to last over a century. A little care ensures they get there.

Every Moonlit Canvas Co print is produced on 310gsm Hahnemühle cotton rag using pigment-based inks rated for 100+ years under museum conditions. That longevity depends partly on the materials — and partly on how the print is displayed and cared for. The six principles below cover everything you need to know.

Framing

Use UV-protective glazing (glass or acrylic) to shield the print from ultraviolet light. Pair with an acid-free mat board to keep the print surface from contacting the glass — trapped moisture can cause irreversible damage over time.

Light & UV

Avoid hanging prints in direct sunlight or under strong halogen spotlights. North- or east-facing walls receive soft, indirect light and are ideal. Even UV-protective glass won't fully compensate for prolonged intense light exposure.

Humidity

The ideal relative humidity range is 40–60%. Avoid bathrooms, kitchens, or any rooms prone to condensation. Rapid humidity fluctuations cause paper fibres to expand and contract, which can lead to cockling or waviness over time.

Handling

Always handle your print with clean cotton gloves, or hold it only by the very edges. Fingerprints transfer oils that are nearly impossible to remove without risking the print surface. Never touch the printed area with bare hands.

Cleaning

If dust accumulates, use a clean, dry soft-bristle brush (a make-up brush works well) and sweep very lightly from top to bottom. Never use water, solvents, or cleaning sprays — even gentle moisture can lift the ink or leave watermarks.

Storage

If storing an unframed print, keep it rolled inside its archival tube in a cool, dry place — not a garage, basement, or attic. Lay tubes horizontally to prevent warping. For long-term storage, interleave with acid-free tissue paper.
